Green Cathedral

The Green Cathedral

The Green Cathedral is positioned on the shores of Wallis Lake, with the walkway to the chapel through a canopy of rainforest palm trees, opening up to a beautiful open air chapel.

The Green Cathedral is a unique and special space with wooden pews in a setting overlooking the distant hills with the soft lapping sound of the waters of Wallis Lake

The Green Cathedral is an open-air consecrated venue constructed for public worship and private devotion back in 1922 by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints.

After months of transporting building materials by barge from Tuncurry to Tiona, construction of the Green Cathedral was complete and the first church reunion was held in December 1922. In attendance were over 250 worshippers.

Passing years saw Tiona grow immensely with the construction of a dining room, service hall, various utilities and in 1956 the first cabins were built to accommodate the growing number of people attending the reunion each year.

Monday, 2nd December 1957 saw devastation rip through Tiona. Flames engulfed the park and Cathedral from all angles, making it seem impossible to save the historic grounds. Just after midnight the all clear was given. The fire was out. Much to everyone’s amazement, the Green Cathedral was untouched and all the buildings were saved!

The Green Cathedral is located in Sundowner Tiona Tourist Park and Booti Booti National Park, boasting some of the most spectacular scenery, from lake sunsets to panoramic views of Seven Mile Beach and provides a magical setting for a wedding, naming ceremony or for quiet prayer.

Capture your precious memories in a location as unique as you are
